Photography 1 Classes
During the first semester of photography, students are exposed to a wide range of photographic topics and styles. Students work entirely from 35mm film negatives and develop the film and images themselves in the school's working darkroom. Students are taught the importance of craftsmanship through their hands-on experience with the traditional medium of photography where luxuries like photoshop and other post-processors of images do not exist. Below you wil find a sampling of the lessons featured during my time at NNHS with the photography intro students.
Action Photography ProjectFor this assignment students were able to experiment with photography's relationship to objects in motion. The three types of motion that we focused on were attaining a panning motion, partial blur motion, and a freeze motion shot. Students were able to work with shutter speed priority for the first time, and learned about the shooting practice of bracketing to help create photographs with very different effects.

Introduction to Hand Tinting PhotographyFor this assignment, students were introduced to the art of hand tinting traditional photographic prints. Students were excited to be able to use fiber-based (versus their usual resin-based) photographic paper for the first time during this lesson. Students were then expected to utilize their skills acquired from a drawing demonstration and their own practice to use PrismaColor pencils to administer color to their piece.

Apprenticeship ProjectFor photography 1 students the apprenticeship project is their final assignment. Students are expected to choose a photographer of their choice to emulate with a final 6 print portfolio. Students were expected to use their research skills to find a photographer that appeals to them aesthetically and extract an aspect of their work to inspire their own process.
