Teaching Philosophy

Art making is a process through which any one individual can actively pursue self-fulfillment through creating something out of anything. As an art educator I hope to not only teach students how to make a piece of art work, but also help them learn to investigate the many different ways of making art. I strive to teach this way because I find value in the process of creating art and engagement with their mediums rather than in a finished piece. I believe that a finished work should be a reflection on a process discovered and allow students to witness and think critically upon its meaning to them as the creator. From a psychological standpoint, I believe the process of art making helps students gain greater understanding of their own world through the process of self-reflection. As students confront their ideas visually, I want to help them learn how to look at themselves, and in turn how this affects what they create. I aim to provide students with both the sense of accomplishment from learning and creating as well as self-confidence and a better knowledge of their identities through creative thinking.
I plan to encourage students to use art making to help facilitate growth by allowing them to define and then refine their own concepts by encouraging students to work through their ideas until they find their own process. It is through this diligence that they will be able to find multiple ways to arrive at their own conclusions. I want to show my students that sometimes you may find more growth in the times where you failed to succeed with your initial idea; a concept that can be transferred into many other areas of their lives.
I believe that art is a subject that can be used to motivate students to not think about one subject in particular, but rather to draw upon many other disciplines as a means for creativity. I feel it is important for students to draw upon their multiple areas of knowledge, experiences, and curiosities to help motivate them to learn and explore their world through creative means. I also want to stress the value in exploring and accepting cultures that may differ from our own by bringing various examples into the classroom. I want to achieve this by recognizing my student’s own cultural identities, but also by exposing them to the ways different cultures and societies use art to explore the world from their perspectives.
As an educator I also hope to provide my students with an atmosphere that encourages open dialogue. As an artist I believe in the value of critique in helping students learn how to express their ideas through their work and at the same time help them effectively communicate their meaning to one another.
By using the art making process, I look for the opportunity to help students become better-rounded individuals.
