Lesson Summary:
In this lesson students investigated the role of dragons in the Chinese Society. Students were then encouraged to brainstorm ideas for issues they wished to investigate through their own creation of a mythical creature that would be a symbol of that particular issue. Some students drew inspiration from issues with harvesting, natural disasters, or other personal issues to create their mythical creature.
Lesson Plan 1 Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Identify a current event/issue, natural phenomenon/disaster, or personal problem that they find themselves facing.
- Create their own mythical creature that helps create an explanation or solution of their designated problem through use of prior knowledge of animal biology and symbolism.
- Defend their creation by generating a myth/legend of their own using their mythical creature they have created.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills learned in sketching through the use of pencils, colored pencils, and markers.
- Utilize their knowledge of animals and their biology to help create their own unique creation to sketch.
Lesson Plan 2 Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate their gained knowledge of cultures that may differ from their own through their discussion on the topic of Chinese dragons and how they are important to the Chinese culture.
- Continue to create their own mythical creature that helps create an explanation or solution of their designated problem through three-dimensional media.
- Demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of clay through creating a three-dimensional figurine of their created creature.
- Discuss and defend why they designed their creation based on their chosen narrative.
Lesson Plan 3 Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Continue to create their own 3D model of their mythical creature that represents an explanation or solution of their designated problem.
- Demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of clay through demonstration and experimentation by creating a three-dimensional figurine of their created creature (Techniques include: score, slip, pinch pot, coiling, etc.).
- Discuss and defend why they designed their creation the way they did based on their chosen narrative.
