Influence: African Collage Artists

Lesson Summary:
In this lesson the students were exposed to two African Contemporary collage artists. The first was Rosemary Karuga, a Kenyan artist who's paper collages have been exhibited all over the world, was the main inspiration for the student's projects. The second was an example of a contemporary digital collage artist.
Lesson Plan 6 Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Discuss works created by contemporary African artists through discussion about portraiture and collage techniques.
- Create their own landscape from a memory of their favorite place to spend time with the process of sketching and creating a collage from a sketch.
- Students will be able to successfully engage in creating a collage piece using paper as the medium.
Lesson Plan 7 Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Be able to discuss works of art created by contemporary African artists through discussion of the portraiture and collage techniques used by the featured artists.
- Understand the differences between both traditional as well as digital media and how they generate different effects and meaning in a work of art.
- Finish their own self-portrait by creating an image of them from a photograph using collage techniques inspired by the African artists studied.
