Influence: Mexican Ex-Voto Paintings (Retablos)
Lesson Summary:
In this lesson students studied the Mexican folk art of Ex-Voto paintings, nicknamed "thank you" paintings. Students were to brainstorm an idea from their life where someone had helped them in some important way. Students were then instructed to sketch their visual re-creation of a time they were helped by someone. They then were able to transfer their sketches onto pieces of insulation with a reflective surface to paint with acrylics. In the end the students included their inscriptions that they wrote to cap off their finished paintings.
